One thing nice about Sibu is of course the food….. I once posted about Seng Kee Agencies‘ Kong Pia. This is another Kong Pia (光饼) bakery shop that bake some nice traditional baked goods (breads and cakes and pastries) apart from .

Just walk straight towards the row of shop houses directly in front of central market of Sibu, it is where this bakery shop located.

This time around I got the chance to observe how they make the Kong Pia. The bowl of water is to sprinkle in the traditional charcoal 'oven' as to lower down the temperature inside.

Using the traditional charcoal 'oven' this is the way they bake the Kong Pia. Once the Kong Pia well baked, the baker withdraws the Kong Pia by 'poking' them with a long thin steel which explains why there are always a hole in the middle of the Kong Pia. There is a saying that the hole is once used to string all the bun together, the main food source of the solders during the war in Fujian province.

More info on how to bake the Kong Pia, just click here.

I bought a lot of them back, I like most the Kong Pia and the Kuih Telur or Long Go in Foochow. The Kuih Telur tastes like the kuih bahulu/ kai tan gou. I also bought some butter milk buns and the Khong Pia (a soft bun without the sesame on) and they are not costly at all. There are huge variety of traditional cakes to opt for, too bad that I couldn’t packed all of them back to Kuching.
